My aim was to create a somewhat chic and stylish market bag. Slouchy doesn’t necessarily have to mean sleazy, if you know what I mean. Anyway, I think I did a pretty good job.
Yarn choice is super important when you want to make something look of better quality and more chic imho. And this doesn’t mean it has to be the most expensive yarn.
I would suggest to use mercerised cotton. When cotton is mercerised, it gets a silk-like lustre which gives it a completely different look and feel. Perfect for this market bag if you ask me!
As it is one of my favourite yarns for market bags, I used Drops Muskat, an excellent mercerised Egyptian cotton. It has a glorious sheen and is super strong and durable. It comes in 40 different shades and is machine washable. Most importantly, cotton is a natural product and completely biodegradable.
Double decker squares
The bag has a solid bottom, which I love, because it keeps things from falling through and this way it does not need a lining.
After the bottom you’ll start making the mesh which comes with an extra round of single crochets and chains to give it a more sophisticated look. So simple, but so elegant!
I love the crochet hearts, always and everywhere. I tried to use them for this bag without making it look too childish. They could also be buds for that matter.
They might look intricate, but they’re quite simple to make as they consist of two clusters. One cluster is a dc3tog, so you crochet 3 double crochets together. Two chains between them and you’re done.
Because of popular demand, I put in two charts to accompany the written instructions. I like working with them more and more and making them gets easier. (Still not my favourite chore, but all for the love of crochet ;)).
